THE MISSION OF DESTINY HOUSE IS DRIVEN BY RECOGNITION OF THE FOLLOWING FACTS:

·         45% of teen girls and 43% of teen boys in Rhode Island report having experienced an incident of abuse in a dating relationship

·         In the United States teenagers experience a higher rate of violent victimization than any other age bracket

·         33% of sexual assaults occur when the victims are between the ages of

                12 and 17

·         Teens 16 to 29 years of age were 3 ½ times more likely to be pushed slapped or kicked by an intimate partner

 

STATS

·         African American account for 1/3 of the intimate partner homicides in this country

And in a national survey done,

·         29% of African American women, and

·         12% of African American men report at least one instance of violence from an intimate partner

 

RISK FACTORS

·         As with other groups; intimate partner violence among African Americans is related to economic factors, and more frequently among couples that have low income

·         Alcohol problems are more frequently related to intimate partner violence for African American than for whites or Hispanics

 

IMPACT OF ABUSE

·         Black women who are battered have more physical ailments and mental health issues.

·         Black women who are battered are less likely to practice safe sex

 

IN A SURVEY OF YOUNG AFRICAN AMERICAN MEN AND WOMEN AGES 16-24:

·         2/3 had been pushed, grabbed, threatened or slapped by a person they were dating

·         1/3 had been beaten by a date

·         ¼ had been threatened with a gun or knife
