Our History

The history of Destiny House is one of personal, social, and cultural struggles. Destiny house is a passion -driven, resident-led, agency, founded in 1998 by a survivor of domestic violence . It is the story of Eleanor Brown  McSwain, founder and executive director, her story is a parallel process to the unfolding creation of Destiny house.

Destiny House was developed to address the inadequacy of domestic violence services for adolescents, pregnant and parenting teens and families in communities of color.  Destiny House innovated a model that helps victims, survivors and perpetrators to identify past traumas and understand how those traumas impact decision-making about their education, relationships, and overall lifestyle.  Through outreach, education, and advocacy we address the social, emotional, and intellectual functioning of children whose experience with trauma interferes with their educational goals, relationships, health, wellness and overall lifestyle.

Our goal is to empower local adolescents pregnant and parenting teens and families to become catalysts in the quest to collectively address critically important gaps in treatment of victims and the social and legal response in these communities.

Destiny House coordinates and integrates the talents of community members -- youth, teens, parents and  business owners -- in the development of the organization and uses the talents and resources of both English and Spanish speaking community members to encourage people to take ownership of their community and work together to improve it.
