On October 21, 2009 Destiny House hosted the first of a series of community forums to address family violence in communities of color. The forum was held at the Davey Lopes Recreation Center.. This forum was held in response to communities of colors' lack of confidence in existing domestic violence services. The forum featured panelists of mental health professionals, students, immigrants rights activists, and a school administrator. These panelist are all from the community which they serve. The event also featured a theatrical performance by Raffini as well as poetry readings by Natasha Clay and Monsurat Ottun. There were group discussions on ways that the community can have a coordinated response to domestic violence and what can be done to address the culture of violence that too many of our families fall victim to. The participants overwhelmingly want the discussion to continue. Destiny House will bring these forums to other venues throughout the community over the next year. The evening ended with the participants signing a contract to do their part to stop family violence in their own families, neighborhood and the community. There were over 75 people in attendance. Check the website often for the next community forum!
